Notes from Class

7-22-10

In our first class, the teacher mentioned Peter M. Senge's book The Fifth Discipline, as well as the idea of context. Here is an excerpt from Senge's book (pdf) that will give you the gist of what he is saying.

  • Inter-Relationships
    • Diversity of opinion when the roles are played out
    • You have to recognize all the different sides of an issue
  • Mental Models
Senge says that any decision you have to make fit into one of six archetypes (see book).external image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTSckuS7xb9A3N9UJOY_3WGCBuCpEhcXbm1bYm1dwMNElwG8FI&t=1&usg=__Xl8q6w6crHxsTJvMN0r8pX9RmE8=

Here are two of his websites: everyware and speedbird.

The topic of using of social network sites like FB to help or harm was addressed. We watched the video about the teenager using FB for unlawful purposes on cbsnews. Watch it here. We also learned about the use of Google Scholar to search academic documents. The term Digital Bombardment was brought up. Learning is all about establishing context. Higher Order Thinking (students) = Senge’s Inter-Relationships (admin). If an email takes up more than four sentences, it should really be a personal conversation. The site Second Life and the potential social ramifications was brought up (did you know that you can give talks and make money on Second Life?). Last but not least, we learned that Edward Tufte would be teaching us about presenting data.
